AL_A were invited to submit proposals for a new subterranean exhibition space and entrance alongside sensitive renovations for Paleis Het Loo, the former royal palace of the House of Orange-Nassau.
Re-energising the Paleis and making it relevant to today’s society, the gallery beneath the courtyard sought to breathe new life into the building alongside the exquisite suite of rooms that tell the rich history of the Dutch Royal Family.
The ground plane was titled downwards to become a dramatic but natural sloping route to a new entrance that led to a large, column-free elliptical gallery space.
The scheme was a thoughtful response to its beautiful baroque gardens and surrounding royal architecture, providing a contemporary space to bring the museum into the twenty-first century.
