The competition for the Centre of Music, located in the City of London, called for the design of a world-class venue for performance and education across all musical genres to inspire a new generation with a love of music.
Our shortlisted concept design for the state-of-the-art concert hall and associated spaces for performance, education and rehearsal proposed an elevated hall enveloped by a series of public terraces and foyers. Arranged in a spiral orientated towards daylight, the building makes the most of its unique position and unrivalled views of prominent city landmarks.
By lifting the hall, the podium is liberated for appropriation by the public, while the architecture projects a prominent message of the importance of culture to London. A visible and inviting public space, visitors are drawn inside where the manipulation of physical and visual thresholds between front and back of house reveal instruments and rehearsal spaces, arousing public curiosity and providing unique venues for teaching and recording.
